WHAT WE DO
Want to cover the NBA or the Premier League? Maybe the Olympics or college football? Want to be a play-by-play announcer? A sports studio show host? A social media producer for an NWSL or NFL team? A sports information director for a college team? A sideline reporter?

If you want to learn what it takes to work in a variety of sports media jobs, we’re here for you.

You don’t have to be in any specific major to apply to our six-course Sports Media Certificate program. You do have to be a UGA undergrad.

Once you’re in the program, we’ll teach you the fundamental skills of sports journalism and communications. We’ll train you to adapt to evolving platforms and tools. We’ll help you:
   
  • Students cover March Madness through USA TODAY partnership

    Sixteen Carmical Sports Media Institute students covered 2025 NCAA Tournament action, from first-round games to the women’s Final Four in Tampa, through a new partnership with the USA TODAY Sports Network.

  • Students cover Paralympics as credentialed journalists for the AP

    Four writers and five photojournalists spent six days covering the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. The Associated Press distributed 20 written features and 175 photos to its worldwide audience.

  • Interested in joining us?

    All UGA undergraduates, regardless of major, can apply to our six-course Sports Media Certificate program. We accept applications every fall and spring. Students begin the program in the semester following acceptance.

Vicki Michaelis

Director

Professor Michaelis oversees all operations of the Carmical Sports Media Institute. She also manages the partnerships that give students opportunities to cover major sports events -- including the World Cup, the Paralympic Games and March Madness -- for The Associated Press and USA TODAY Sports Network. Before coming to UGA, she was USA TODAY's lead Olympics reporter for 12 years. She also covered NBA and college football beats for the Denver Post and Palm Beach Post.

Welch Suggs

Associate Director

Dr. Suggs teaches and leads research efforts in the Carmical Sports Media Institute. He is the former senior editor at The Chronicle of Higher Education. He also reported for Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal. He authored "A Place on the Team: The Triumph and Tragedy of Title IX" and researches college athletics policy and workplace issues in sports media, among other topics.

Carlo Finlay

Assistant Director

Professor Finlay is the Assistant Director of the Carmical Sports Media Institute and leads advising for sports media students. Before coming to UGA, he was junior partner with Tonic Entertainment and director of public relations for Mavericks Surf Ventures.

David Lawson

Lecturer

Professor Lawson specializes in sports broadcasting and production. He is a local television professional at turned academic. He teaches the fundamentals of video production and event broadcasting. Prior to UGA, he worked at WCBI-TV and the University of Alabama.

Andy Johnston

Instructor

Professor Johnston guides students in the basics of sports reporting. He is also the editor of the Oglethorpe Echo. His sports writing career includes work for the Augusta Chronicle and Atlanta Journal-Constitution, among others. He also co-founded Fast Copy Communications.

Dayne Young

Program Coordinator

Professor Young leads the Carmical Sports Media Institute's event planning and internal and external marketing, including social media. He's was sports director for WRBL-TV and works with UGASports.com, where he leads coverage efforts in podcasting and YouTube content. He has also worked in public relations with clients like the TOUR Championship and All Pro Dad.

Anthony Amey

Clinical Assistant Professor

Professor Amey is a clinical assistant professor in the Carmical Sports Institute. He worked for more than two decades as a sports anchor and reporter, including ESPN and three Top 20 markets, including Atlanta-area WSB-TV.

Sam Jones

Instructor

Professor Jones is an instructor in the Carmical Sports Media Institute. His sports media career includes writing for MLSsoccer.com, the official site of Major League Soccer. He has covered some of soccer's biggest events including the MLS Cup and Copa América.
